I think you've misunderstood the point I'm making completely.

Someone shoots and kills a man because he bursts into a nightclub and points a pistol at the patrons.

It is later determined that the gun was fake, and it was just a publicity stunt to promote a video game. But because the event was put on by a company hired by the publisher of the game and not the publisher itself, you would call the stunt a "success" because it drew media attention to the game.

Wtf? That's not even remotely what I was saying.

You're attaching what I personally feel on it (which is the opposite of what you're suggesting) with what would be a success for them.

The whole point of marketing is to make as many people aware of a product as possible... I think that in terms of sales numbers that if such an incident occurred it would positively effect their sales... therefore it would be a success for them.
