Description This Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase by Kozan is of miniature ovoid form and dates to the Meiji period, circa 1890. The body is finely decorated with a continuous figural scene depicting bijin arranged around a central floral display, with children extending across the surface. The upper section is worked on a dense gilt ground with a geometric border, while the lower section is decorated with a band of finely painted flowers set against a lighter ground. The contrast between the two registers gives the piece a clear visual structure. The decoration is executed in polychrome enamels with extensive gilt detailing throughout, consistent with Kyoto workshop production of the late Meiji period. The shoulder and neck are finished with intricate gilt patterning with a typical crackled glaze. The underside is signed Kozan 光山 within a gilt reserve.
